Yesterday, Charlie Brooker wrote:
“Assisting Boris in his run, the London Evening Standard is running an openly hostile anti-Livingstone campaign, which means every other page carries a muckraking down-with-Ken piece from crusading journalist Andrew Gilligan, played by Blinky, the three-eyed fish from The Simpsons, in his byline photo. All the articles blend into one after a while, but their central implication is that Ken’s a boozy egomaniac surrounded by a corrupt circus of cronies, so you might as well vote for a rightwing comedy pillock instead. You know, him off the telly. With the blond hair. LOL!!!! WHAT A LEGERND!!!!!

Now, even if the Standard photographs Ken carving a swastika into a dormouse’s back, I’ll vote for him[.]”

Today, the London Evening Standard runs with the headline:

“Islamic Extremist runs Ken Campaign”

This is also viewable online, where Keith Dovkants’ headline reads:

“Suicide bomb backer runs Ken’s campaign”
www.thisislondon.co.uk/standard-mayor/article-23478705-de… bomb backer runs Ken’s campaign/article.do?expand=true

But the article then describes something rather different in its first paragraph:

“An advocate of suicide bombing is among leaders of a group trying to mobilise Muslim voters to back Ken Livingstone, the Standard reveals today.”

I continue to operate in the hope that we’re actually watching a pastiche of a mayoral campaign — the children’s matinee version, complete with the bumbling court jester character — and that the political parties will announce their real candidates shortly.
