Modern Photography, March 1954
"This Month’s Cover:

Isabel Bigley, star of the new Rogers and Hammerstein musical, Me and Juliet, is the subject of this month’s photographic cover essay by David Preston.

Preston sought to achive a poster quality in his picture so that the photography of Miss Bigley would be visible at a great distance. Poster quality is quite necessary on a magazine cover where you wish prospective customers to see the cover on the newsstand as they pass by.

Accordingly, Preston selected a one piece, light colored garment for Miss Bigley which would contrast sharply and cleanly with the single color red background. He posted her in a seated position to achieve the largest subject image in the smallest amount of space.

He used an 8×10 view camera with a 4×5 reducing back and 14in. Ektar lens. His exposure on Ektachrome Daylight type was f/8 with electronic flash."

Here’s another contemporary shot from LIFE magazine: "Me And Juliet" – Play, Isabel Bigley – Dancer And Singer

Leonie Pinup 7 Remixed
Original photo by Eye Candy For The Broken Hearted.

I originally set out to see what the pic would look like if i cloned out the toe of her left shoe. Then, since I am unable to leave perfectly nice photos alone (and also because old pinup art was drawings, not photography) I took a stab at making it look more like a drawing. I used the Smudge Stick filter, then used Color Range to select the blue background, inversed the selection and cut most out most of the background and overlaid it on white. Last, I duplicated the layer and made a photocopy of it, smoothed it with the palette tool and reduced the opacity to 5% to give a bit of definition to her arm and waist.
