Master Breasts
Photographs of breasts are everywhere: in museums, on book covers, in fashion ads, & on posters. Alluring symbols of womanhood, breasts have fascinated generations of image makers, both male & female. Revealed here for the first time is the breast in photography: the titillating breast, the maternal breast, the aging breast & the symbolic breast.

Baikal Bullfinch female
Pyrrhula pyrrhula cinerea – Baikal Bullfinch – серый снегирь

Spotted this Baikal bullfinch on my way to work yesterday, the first working day after the annoyingly long winter break which was useless in terms of photography (not much to do outside at -35C).
Coincidentally yesterday was the first "warm" day (only -20 C), so I saw a lot of other birds, too, including a coaltit, a large group of waxwings, and a goshawk who tried to catch a pigeon from a flock that lives in the attic of the Cytology and Genetics Institute; the pigeon did a barrel roll and escaped, and the goshawk flew away – I was surprised that it had decided to stay here through the winter because often they go South, especially when winters are as cold as this year’s.

Too bad I wasn’t able to photograph the male, whose breast is ash-gray and not red; the females of both species (or sub-species) are more or less the same with their pinkish-gray breasts, the only difference is the wing bar which is narrower and grayer in the Baikal Bullfinch. The difference is especially obvious when you can watch the two species together in a mixed flock – this was the case yesterday.

Happy belated holidays to you all, haven’t been on flickr over the past few weeks, a lot of catching up to do!
