Supply train steaming into a railhead
A convoy of trucks is parked in line, along the length of a road. They have been awaiting the arrival of a train, which has just pulled into the railhead. The system of distributing supplies across the Front often started with the goods arriving by boat. They were then loaded on to a train and either transported directly to one of the large storage areas set up at the Front or distributed further.

‘Tommy entered into general usage after the Rudyard Kipling poems, ‘Tommy and ‘To Thomas Atkins (1892), which pay homage to the sturdy character of the average British soldier. During his time at the Front, Warwick Brooke managed to capture many different aspects of life, from daily life in the trenches to the work that went on behind the lines.

[Original reads: ‘OFFICIAL PHOTOGRAPH TAKEN ON THE WESTERN FRONT. HOW TOMMY IS FED. The supply train steaming into a railhead.’]
