DSLR Tips Night Photography – Nocturnal photography (how to photograph night)
Photographic Technique: Nocturnal photography (how to photograph night)

How many times we have seen wonderful nocturnal images of cities, with those irreal lights whose transform common urban landscapes into misterious places, with fantastic lights and colors?

Now we have a crossroads in front of us: taking pictures in the "blue time" or truly nocturnal photos. During the blue time (which lasts about twenty minutes), the sun is still rising, or setting, therefore we can still use a short enough shooting time and get pictures with both a beautiful blue sky and city lights on. Whereas in a nocturnal picture we will get a dark (black) sky, or with some moon shining, and city lights.
Luckly for us, April and May are the best periods over the year for such kind of of photos, because dawns and sunsets last longer and the weather is quite good. Often, better results can be achieved just after the sunset or before the dawn.

Night photography at the Cap d’Antibes.
This is a long exposure shot of the bay of the Juan Les Pins.
I wanted to do this to get a nice effect with the sea playing on the rocks, and I was luckily rewarded when a fisherman came back from fishing, with his mobile phone in hand, to light his way on the rocks. This created a kind of light painting path that balances the shot quite nicely I think.
